Beryllium, a grey metallic element belonging to group II of the periodic table (the alkaline-earth metals). It is extracted from the mineral beryl (Beryllium aluminosilicate) by the Copaux process and is used in a number of alloys. Beryllium- copper alloys are used in nuclear reactors as reflectors and moderators. Beryllium and its compounds are toxic and can cause serious lung diseases and dermatitis. Beryllium has the chemical symbol Be and was isolated independently by F. Woehler and A. Bussy in 1828.
