Caption

Cross polarised light micrograph of a thin section of quartzite, also known as 'Arkose', a metamorphic rock from Ord, Isle of Skye, off Scotland. This sample consists of evenly sized & rounded crystals, which is an indication that it was transported far from its source, during which time the grains were sorted and smoothed. Magnification X2.5 at 35mm size. Microcosmos P.139 fig.7.25 Technical info: cross polarised light.
