Polarised light micrograph of a thin section of quartzite, a metamorphic rock (location unknown). The composition of quartzite varies: quartz is an essential component, with accessories of mica and feldspar. In thin section, quartzite typically contains interlocking laminae of light- coloured mica and displays vivid interference colours. Quartzite is used in the construction industry (as flooring and facing materials) & in the glass & ceramics industries. Magnification: x11 at 6x6cm size.
