Polarised light micrograph of a thin section of granite, an igneous rock with a complicated mineral assemblage. Quartz, orthoclase & plagioclase feldspars, biotite & chlorite are all present. The variously shaded grey crystals are quartz, the most common mineral found on earth. The mineral biotite shows as a variety of bright interference colours (green, pink, yellow). Magnification x7 at 6x6cm size.
