Polarised light micrograph of a thin section of porphyritic granite, showing large crystals of feldspar. Granite is an igneous rock composed of quartz, feldspar and mafic minerals (which usually include micas or horneblende). The term porphyritic refers to the texture of the rock. Porphyritic granites contain large crystals embedded in a fine-grained, compact matrix. Magnification: x80 at 35mm size.
