Peridotite. Polarised light micrograph of a thin section of peridotite, a type of magmatic rock. It is composed mostly of olivine and pyroxene. It is thought that much of the mass of the Earth is peridotite, as it forms most of the mantle. Magnification: x5.5 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
