Caption

Weathered columnar basalt formation. Columnar basalt is formed by rapid cooling of a lava flow. The hexagonal shape of the columnar jointing is due to the prescence of pyroxene. Photographed in the Cantal region of the Auvergne Volcanoes National Park, France.
