Marble sample, close-up. Marble is a metamorphic rock formed from the alteration of limestone by heat and pressure beneath the Earth's surface. This sample, from the famous quarry of Castione, contains schistous feldspar and mica regions (black), with some quartz in between. This sample is from Castione, the Leventina Valley, Ticino, Switzerland.
