Sample of cuprite. A form of copper oxide, cuprite appears as dark red octahedral or dodecahedral crystals. It is found in the oxidation zone of copper deposits, and is frequently associated with malachite and native copper. Cuprite is a major ore of copper, but some flawless large stones are cut for gems. This sample was found in Cornwall.
