Pieces of manganese, a brittle, grey transition metal. The main commercial manganese ore is pyrolusite (manganese oxide), but it is also extracted from rhodochrosite, braunite and hausmannite. Manganese is used as a deoxidising agent and in alloys with other metals, especially in ferrous alloys known as manganese steels. The element was discovered in 1774 by Scheele and has the chemical symbol Mn.
