Rock salt crystals. Cubic crystals of rock salt (known as halite) or naturally occurring sodium chloride (chemical formula NaCl). Rock salt is caused by the drying of bodies of salt water. It usually crystallizes in the form of cubes, and has perfect cleavage, the tendency to split along definite crystal planes. Rock salt is used in the chemical industry and as a preservative in the food industry.
