Mica. Piece of mica, showing its layered structure. Mica, a form of aluminium silicate, displays perfect cleavage, the tendency to split along definite crystal planes as seen here. It is used as an electrical insulator, for fireproofing, and as a lubricant when mixed with oil. There are a number of different types of mica with a variety of colours, the distinctions depending upon the impurities present.
