Fluorite. Crystal of mauve fluorite, naturally occurring calcium fluoride (Ca.F2). In the presence of impurities fluorite can be a variety of colours such as the mauve seen here. Flourite usually occurs as cubic octahedral crystals. It is found in North America, Russia, Europe and China. Here it is mined for the manufacture of hydroflu- oric acid. This specimen is from Illinois, USA.
