Iron pyrites. Cubic crystal of iron pyrites or sulphide (FeS2), also known as fool's gold, in an unidentified mineral. Iron pyrites is used as a source of sulphur and in the manufacture of sulphuric acid. It is the most abundant sulphide mineral, being found in igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. Its brass-yellow colour and metallic lustre lead inexperienced prospectors to believe that they have found precious metal.
