Actinolite crystals (calcium magnesium iron silicate hydroxide). This mineral is the intermediate member of a magnesium-iron series of minerals with differing proportions of iron and magnesium ions in their structures. One variety of actinolite forms fibrous crystals of asbestos. This is used for fire-retardant materials and brake pads. It is no longer used as insulation due to health concerns.
