Garnet gemstones. Garnet is a relatively common group of minerals, which can be cut and polished for use in jewellery. Gemstones are solid crystalline substances (minerals), formed by natural processes. Garnets share the general formula of A3.B2(SiO4)3, where A represents metals such as calcium and B represents metals such as aluminium. Differences between different types of garnet are shown by their varying colours.
