Malachite, cut and polished section. Malachite is a hydrated form of copper carbonate. It is formed by oxidation of copper deposits. Malachite is a valuable decorative stone used to make small tables, boxes, ornaments and jewellery. In the past it was crushed and used as a pigment called mountain green. This sample is from the copper- mining province of Katanga (formerly Shaba) in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
