Geode. Macrophotograph of the cut and polished surface of a sectioned geode. A geode is a hollow rock in which layers of crystals have been deposited over time. The solution from which the crystals precipitated entered through a small hole at lower left. The mineral found in geodes is usually agate, a form of chalcedony. This is a type of quartz.
