Large ruby. Thin slice of a large ruby embedded in zoisite (green). It is 10 centimetres in diameter. The illumination of the thin slice from behind has revealed the growth planes, cracks and fissures in the crystal, resulting from stresses as it formed. This type of ruby is unique to Longida, Tanzania. Used as a gemstone, ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum (aluminium oxide).
