Ornamental rock surface. Patterns on a surface of a cut and polished piece of rock from the Arno Valley, Tuscany, Italy. The patterns have formed as oxides of manganese and iron (brown) stained the rock. Water deposited the oxides in the rock as it seeped through cracks. The cracks formed as the deformed and compacted under pressure. Polished stones like these are used as ornaments, and are prized for these beautiful patterns.
