Caption

Sample of ilmenite. This is a form of iron titanium oxide, and is a major ore of titanium. It is hard and heavy, and is found as large rhombohedral crystals or the type of compact aggregate seen here. It is common in plutonic rock formations, in pegmatites, and sometimes in marine sands. Large commercial deposits are located in Scandinavia, Brazil, India, and the Ilmen Mountains in Russia.
