Palaeoanthropologist Dr Alun Hughes during excavations at Sterkfontein, South Africa. The site was first opened by Robert Broom in the 1930s where he made the first of his significant hominid discoveries. The site was re-opened in the 1970s by Phillip Tobias under the directorship of Alun Hughes.
