Prehistoric flint hand axe, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This is the edge of a flint axe, which has been sharpened to a fine point. This type of tool was used for a variety of tasks, including butchering animals, cutting wood and hunting. Magnification: x40 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
