The term gracile refers to the lighter-built Australopithecus africanus and A. aferensis. The term robust refers to the heavier-built A. robustus and A. boisei. The australopithecines, the oldest hominids discovered, are thought to have lived from 3.7 to 1.6 million years ago. The dates for Homo erectus are 1.6 million years ago to 200,000 years ago.
