Fossilised insect. Light micrograph of a mosquito seen in amber. Amber is the fossilised resin from coniferous trees of the Middle Tertiary period about 40 million years ago. It is often washed ashore on the Baltic coast with plant and animal specimens preserved in it; many extinct species have been found in this way. It ranges in colour from red to yellow. Magnification: x8 at 35mm size.
