Caption

Fossil fish. A shoal of fossilised fish (Knightia alta (Leidy)) from the Eocene period (54-38 mill- ion years ago). This unusually well-preserved fos- sil is called a 'life assemblage' because it shows a group of animals that were killed suddenly and then preserved where they lay. The fish are teleosts (bony fish) and were found in the Green River Formation in Kemmerer, Wyoming, USA.
