Fossilised mastodon tusk protruding from rock. The mastodon (Mammut sp.) lived from 20 million years ago to about 10,000 years ago. It was an elephant-like animal, part of the megafauna (large animals) of prehistoric times that became extinct. Numerous fossils have been unearthed across the Americas. This fossil was found in Ecuador.
