Skate fossil. Rock containing a fossil (dark brown areas) of a Cyclobatis sp. skate. Fossils appear as rock slowly forms around objects buried in mud. As the rock forms, the shape and anatomy of buried animals and plants can be preserved. In this case, the cartilaginous skeleton is seen radiating out from the central body, with the tail at right. The skates are flat fish that are related to rays and sharks. The Cyclobatis skates looked like modern skates, and are now extinct. They lived during the Cretaceous period some 146-65 million years ago.
