Illustration of a pair of stethacanthus, sharks that lived during the late Devonian and Carboniferous eras (370-345 million years ago); the male had an unusual dorsal fin shaped like an anvil or iron, covered with spiny denticles, toothlike projections, and a corresponding patch of denticles on top of his head.
