Scimitar cat attacking a hominid, artist's impression. The scimitar cat (Homotherium sp.) was a member of the sabre-toothed cat family (Machairodontinae) which lived throughout Africa, Eurasia and North America between 3 million to 10,000 years ago. Its prey included hominids such as Australopithecus africanus (shown here).
