Extinction of the dinosaurs. Computer artwork of a group of pterosaurs during the meteorite impact that is thought to have killed the dinosaurs. The impact devastated the Earth and sent large dust or water vapour clouds into the atmosphere, lowering global temperatures. Plant and then animal life died off. It is believed that a large meteorite strike caused the mass loss of life that included the extinction of the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous period 65 million years ago. Pterosaurs were flying reptiles that lived between 200-65 million years ago.
