Extinction of the dinosaurs. Computer artwork of a group of dinosaurs and flying reptiles during the meteorite impact (fireball in background) that is thought to have triggered their extinction. The impact devastated the Earth and sent large dust or water vapour clouds into the atmosphere, lowering global temperatures. Plant and then animal life died off. The mass loss of life that included the extinction of the dinosaurs occurred at the end of the Cretaceous period 65 million years ago. The quadraped dinosaur is a Saltasaurus, the horned dinosaur is a Torosaurus and the flying reptiles are Pteranodons.
