Extinction of the dinosaurs. Computer artwork of a dinosaur reacting in alarm to the meteorite impact (fireball in background) that is thought to have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. The impact devastated the Earth, sending large dust or water vapour clouds into the atmosphere, lowering global temperatures. Plant and then animal life died off. The mass loss of life that included the extinction of the dinosaurs occurred at the end of the Cretaceous period some 65 million years ago.
