Soil erosion. Canyon formed by water erosion. Erosion of soil has been accelerated in many tropical regions of the world by deforestation. The absence of trees causes water to run off the land, creating torrents that carve gorges and canyons by carrying soil away. The red colour of the soil indicates that it has a high iron content. Photographed at the Ampijoroa Forest Station in Madagascar.
