False-colour satellite image of central California, USA. The large lagoon at left is the San Francisco Bay; the city occupies the peninsula just below the bay entrance. The large city surrounding the south-eastern end of the bay is San Jose. Two mountain ranges run parallel to the coast; the Sierra Nevada (red, top right) and the Coastal Range (grey & red, just inland from the bay). Between these is the red and blue chequerboard of California's fertile central valley, which supplies much of the Western United States with fruit and vegetables. To the south of San Jose are the Santa Cruz Mountains (red).
