Caption

Mount Ararat. Infrared SPOT satellite image of Mount Ararat in Turkey. North is towards the top. Vegetation appears red, snow white, bare soil and rock blue, water black. Ararat (5123 metres) is the snow-capped mountain below centre. To its southeast is Little Ararat (3896 m), an extinct volcano. Running across the upper frame is the River Aras, which forms the border between Turkey and Armenia. Note the intensively farmed land north of the border. The rocky hills in the lower right lie in Iran. The red and black area in the lower left is a marsh. Image data gathered by one of the French SPOT satellites.
