Western Alps, 3D computer artwork. The western Alps extends through France (bottom), Germany (middle top), Switzerland (left) and Italy (top right). On the right is the Mediterranean Sea and the flat region from centre to top right is the Po Valley (or Po Basin) of northern Italy. This image was created by Christoph Hormann using data obtained from satellites such as Landsat and SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission). The data was processed into computer models using three-dimensional rendering software and then coloured and distorted to mimic the natural curvature of the Earth.
