Grand Canyon. View across the Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA. This extensive canyon has been created by the Colorado River cutting down into the rock. The plateau which houses the canyon has also been rising, increasing the effect of the water erosion. It is a relatively recent feature, having been formed in the last six million years. The rocks exposed at the bottom of the canyon, some 1500 metres below the plateau, are thought to be up to one billion years old. The entire canyon system is around 446 kilometres long and 29 kilometres wide.
