Canyons. View from Dead Horse Point, Utah, USA, over canyons carved in sedimentary rock. The cliffs seen here were formed by the deposition of successive layers of sediment over time. These were later compressed into rock. The canyons were formed later through erosion by local rivers. The Colorado River is seen at upper left.
