Great Rift Valley landscape, Kenya, aerial photograph. The Great Rift Valley has been formed by seismic forces as the Earth's tectonic plates move apart in this area. This has created the large cliffs seen here, in which layers of sedimentary rock are seen. The Great Rift Valley extends for thousands of kilometres north to south through eastern Africa, from Ethiopia to Mozambique.
