The Curaray River meandering through the rain forest in Ecuador. The dark crescent-shaped object to the left of the river is an old ox-bow lake. Erosion of the river bank is at the greatest along the outside of bends. Over a long period, this may lead to parts of the meander being cut off and bypassed. The older part of the river is thus isolated, and forms the characteristic ox-bow lake.
