River Senegal. Coloured satellite view of part of the River Senegal, West Africa. The river is the border between the desert sands of Mauritania (upper right) and the savanna of Senegal (bottom left corner). This boundary zone is known as the sahel. The river runs through a wide alluvial meander plain (grey) with numerous sub-channels and lakes. The desert area is largely rock (pale greys) with sand dunes (yellow) and thin vegetation (red) seen in shallow linear depressions. The richer red colour of the savanna is due to thicker mixed scrub and bush vegetation. SPOT is a French Earth observation satellite.
