River Senegal. Coloured satellite view of part of the River Senegal, West Africa. The river is the border between Mauritania (top) and Senegal (bottom). This boundary zone is known as the sahel. The river runs through a wide alluvial meander plain (brownish grey) with numerous sub- channels and lakes. Both sides of the river are covered with savanna vegetation, a mixture of thin scrub and bushes on a feeble, rocky soil. Bare soil, particularly near the river, has some sand (yellow). Near the top of the frame, a dark green line marks an escarpment of iron-rich rock. SPOT is a French Earth observation satellite.
