Caption

Landsat photograph of the Yangtze delta and Shanghai, on the east coast of China. The Yangtze is China's longest river. The swirls of blue and beige are areas of off-shore sediment indicating that the delta is still growing. The three main islands in the river mouth, Chongming, Changxing and Hengsha, have been created from such depos- ition of sand & silt. Shanghai appears as a brown smudge on the dark blue Huangpu River in the lower part of the image. The area shown here is highly cultivated, & the networks of fine blue & white lines are irrigation canals. Notice regions of man-made coastline (top) with salt-pans (black).
