Overgrown canal choked with hyacinth plants. Water hyacinth (Eichornia crassipes) is native to South America. It and related species grow and spread at a tremendous rate, causing problems wherever they have been introduced. They form impenetrable mats of floating vegetation. Photographed in Ecuador.
