Hot springs. View across hot springs, showing the deposition of iron minerals. The springs are in an area of geothermal activity. Superheated water underground dissolves many of the minerals in the surrounding rocks. When the water escapes to the surface, its power as a solvent diminishes, so the minerals are precipitated. The springs seen here are in Yellowstone National Park, USA.
