Barley. Ripe ears of barley (Hordeum vulgare) growing in a field with red poppy flowers (Papaver sp.). Barley is a cereal crop that is harvested for the grains found in the ears on the end of the stalks. Barley is used mainly as an animal feed, and also in the manufacture of beer and whisky. Poppies are a common agricultural weed.
