Periodic table. Artwork of the periodic table. The table shows the chemical elements arranged in order of how many postively-charged particles (protons) they have in their nucleus. Elements with similar chemistry occur in the same vertical column. Different groups of elements are colour- coded: alkaline metals (orange); transition metals (magenta-blue); semi-metals & non- metals (green); noble gases (dark blue); lanthanide series (magenta-green); actinide series (magenta-orange). Hydrogen (H) stands alone from the non-metals. Elements with 110, 111 & 112 protons have yet to be named. Periodic tables help scientists to predict how an element will behave chemically.
