Caption

Agriculture. Infrared SPOT satellite image of field patterns in polder (reclaimed land) next to Ijsselmeer Lagoon in the Netherlands. North is towards the top. Vegetation appears red, water blue-black, soil and urban areas blue-white. Most of the land here was reclaimed from the sea by a dam (not seen) built in 1932 across the north of the Lagoon. Because the polder is below sea level, water is continually pumped out of the lagoon to keep it clear. A dyke crosses the Lagoon at lower left. Towns visible include Lelystad (lower centre) and Enkhuizen (centre left). Image data gathered by one of the French SPOT satellites.
