Caption

Centre pivot irrigation. Satellite image of centre pivot irrigation on the outskirts of Kuwait City, Kuwait. Lush vegetation is green, dry or harvested fields are brown. Each circular field has a metal beam attached at the centre. The beam, which has sprinklers along its length, can be rotated around its pivot to ensure even watering of the crops. Some fields have been partially planted and harvested, resulting in the semicircular shapes seen. The data for this 2.5-metre-resolution image were obtained by the SPOT-5 Earth observation satellite, which was launched in 2002. This image covers an area approximately 3 kilometres across.
